The ABC’s of Roofing

At NKS Contracting, we take pride in our knowledge and expertise and want to share some of the ABCs of roofing.  As a homeowner, when you step back and look at some of the features of your home, you might notice a few things in particular. Maybe you’ll notice the windows, the paint, or even your yard, but what people often forget to think about is their roof. The roof of a home often goes overlooked, but the roof is really one of the more important structures of the roof that helps to keep the integrity of the home.

Roofing ABC’s

A - Asphalt Shingles: The most common type of roofing material made of fiberglass or organic mat coated with asphalt and granules.

B - Bird's Mouth: A notch cut into a rafter to allow it to fit snugly onto a wall or plate.

C - Chimney Flashing: Metal strips are used to prevent water from seeping into the intersection between the chimney and the roof.

D - Decking: The base layer of the roof, typically made of plywood or oriented strand board (OSB).

E - Eave: The horizontal edge of the roof that overhangs the wall of a building.

F - Fascia: A vertical board attached to the edge of the roof, typically where the gutters are mounted.

G - Gable Roof: A traditional roof design with two sloping sides that meet at a central ridge.

H - Hip Roof: A roof design where all sides slope downwards to the walls, including the ends.

I - Ice Dam: A ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof, preventing proper drainage and potentially causing leaks.

J - Joist: Horizontal beams that support the decking and distribute the weight of the roof to the walls.

K - Kickout Flashing: A specialized flashing used to divert water away from the wall and into the gutter.

L - Low-Slope Roof: A roof with a slight pitch that is less steep than a standard pitched roof.

M - Mansard Roof: A roof design with two slopes on each side, creating a more vertical appearance on the lower slope.

N - Nailer: A wooden or metal strip attached to the deck or truss to provide a surface for securing roofing materials.

O - Overhang: The part of the roof that extends beyond the exterior walls of the building.

P - Pitch: The angle of a roof's slope, often measured in inches of vertical rise per foot of horizontal run.

Q - Quick nails: Short nails are used to temporarily secure roofing materials during installation.

R - Ridge Vent: A vent installed at the peak of the roof to allow for proper air circulation and ventilation.

S - Soffit: The underside of the roof overhang, usually ventilated to allow air to flow into the attic.

T - Truss: Prefabricated frames made of wood or metal that support the roof and provide structural stability.

U - Underlayment: A layer of material, such as felt or synthetic, installed beneath the roofing material to provide an extra barrier against moisture.

V - Valley: The intersection of two sloping roof planes, often requiring special flashing to channel water away.

W - Weep Hole: A small opening in a wall or flashing to allow water to escape and prevent moisture buildup.

X - X-Bracing: Diagonal bracing is used to stabilize roof trusses or support the roof structure.

Y - Yield Point: The stress point at which a material, such as metal, permanently deforms or fails.

Z - Zinc Strips: Strips of zinc are placed along roof ridges to inhibit the growth of algae and moss.
